EDITORS' GUIDELINES

Download guidelines here.

Storybones is looking for experienced freelance editors with strong skills on either a copy edit or line editing level (or both). Basic editorial skills are sufficient for copy editing. Familiarity and comfort with role playing games is necessary for effective line editing with project oversight. We most prefer editors with strong RPG backgrounds and publication credits, but will consider different skill sets on a case-by-case basis.

For editors coming from a professional novelist/fiction writing or short story background, you may fit into a niche that combines story continuity/plot tracking/character analysis with copy editing (that is to say: a portion of line editing duties sans detailed RPG mechanics). Lack of RPG experience is not a hindrance for such hybrid creatures. We are happy to talk with you to discover how your skills might fit our needs.

The people who will have the greatest versatility on our team (and who will be most in demand for project oversight) are those who command the full spectrum of editorial skills, from proof reading to mastery of game mechanics and copy revision or rewrites that come from that point of view.

All editors must be production oriented and deadline responsive. The work ethic must fit well into a cooperative, collaborative environment and allow for iterative exchanges and time-sensitive reviews of work. Projects here are managed on a collaborative team level that is somewhat different than most work-for-hire contracting or freelance RPG work. Our team members are communicative, responsive to phone and email, and have good problem-solving, discussion, and people skills.

All writing and editorial work is done on a work-for-hire basis. Storybones owns all rights in materials under development or in the finished product. We compensate on a royalty basis which is calculated to pay the editor industry standard rates, plus bonus to be negotiated. Rates may vary considerably depending upon the level of editing needed and the amount of original work that is produced in the course of product development, incidental to editing duties.

Please note that we are happy to work with editors who wish to do more design work, or designers who wish to move into editing.

If interested, email Teramis with a narrative of your experience and a bibliography of your editing or publication credits. Persons with a history of missed deadlines or poor collaborative work need not apply.
